How to mute words on X

You mute words on X under Settings and privacy, in Muted words: add a word, phrase, or hashtag, choose where and for how long, and save. X then keeps posts with that word out of your Home timeline, notifications, and replies.

How do I mute words on X?

On X, go to Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Mute and block > Muted words, and click Add. Add one word, phrase, or hashtag at a time, choose where and for how long to mute it, and click Save.

  1. Open Settings and privacy.
  2. Go to Privacy and safety > Mute and block > Muted words.
  3. Click Add (the + button).
  4. Type one word, phrase, or hashtag. You add them one at a time.
  5. Choose where to mute it: the Home timeline, notifications, or both.
  6. Choose how long: forever, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days.
  7. Click Save.

Posts with a muted word are then removed from your Home timeline, your notifications, and replies. Repeat the steps for each word.

Why does muting words on X miss posts?

Muted words on X match only the words you list, so they miss posts about the same topic that use other words. Mute “election”, and a post about “the vote on Tuesday” still gets through.

  • The list is never done. You add word after word, and new posts still find new words.
  • No exceptions. You can’t say “mute politics, but keep history threads”. A muted word hides every post that uses it.

How do I mute a whole topic on X?

Write one rule for the topic on the X tab of the Feed Diet side panel, such as “No politics, except history threads.” Feed Diet reads each post on your X timeline and blurs or hides the ones that break the rule, even when they use none of the words you would have muted.

No politics, except history threads.

  1. Add Feed Diet to Chrome.
  2. Click the Feed Diet icon in the toolbar to open the side panel, and pick the X tab.
  3. Type your rule and click Save.
  4. Choose Blur or Hide. Blur covers a post, and one click shows it. Hide removes it.

Your X rule is separate from your YouTube rule. Change it any time, and the timeline follows it at once. For YouTube rules, see how to hide YouTube Shorts and how to block brain rot.

Should I use muted words or Feed Diet on X?

Use both. Keep X muted words for the exact terms you never want to see anywhere, and use a Feed Diet rule for whole topics. Feed Diet works on your X timeline, but it does not filter notifications.

Questions

Can muted words on X have exceptions?

No. A muted word on X hides every post that uses it, in the places you picked. For exceptions, write them into a Feed Diet rule, such as “No sports, except the Olympics.”

Does Feed Diet see my direct messages on X?

No. Feed Diet never reads your direct messages. It reads the posts in your timeline, sends a post’s text and author to be judged, and stores none of it.

See the privacy policy.

Is Feed Diet free?

Feed Diet has a 7-day free trial, with no account needed for the first 3 days. After that, Pro is $5 a month or $50 a year.

Does Feed Diet work in the X app?

No. Feed Diet is a Chrome extension, so it works on x.com in Chrome on a computer, not in the X phone app.

Mute a topic, not a word.
